NBA Europe: League Project Gains Momentum Ahead of Planned 2027 Launch

The NBA's ambitious plan to establish a European professional league continues to move forward. Following the NBA Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas, Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the project remains on schedule for a Fall 2027 launch, with strong interest from investors and cities across Europe.

According to the league, NBA Europe is expected to feature 16 teams, including 12 permanent franchises and four merit-based qualification spots. Developed in partnership with FIBA, the competition is designed to complement domestic leagues while creating a premier pan-European basketball competition.

Several of Europe's basketball strongholds—including Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Athens, Istanbul, and London—are among the leading candidates to host franchises. NBA officials also revealed that the bidding process has generated greater interest than anticipated, with the first successful bids potentially being announced in the coming weeks.

If launched as planned, NBA Europe would become one of the league's most significant international expansion projects and could reshape the landscape of European club basketball. Discussions with investors, clubs and governing bodies are ongoing as the NBA works toward finalizing the structure of what could become a transformative competition for basketball in Europe.
